Bamboo: Ghana's new gold

We sometimes call bamboo the new gold of Ghana. Did you know that bamboo was actually introduced there by accident?
In the 1960s and 70s, Bambusa vulgaris was planted as a quick solution to deforestation. For years, nobody did anything with it; it was even seen as a weed. Fortunately, bamboo is now gaining real value. We buy bamboo directly from farmers, who can finally earn money from something that sat unused on their land for years.
Why are we fans of bamboo?
Choosing bamboo is a conscious choice for the planet. The benefits of this natural product are enormous:
-
Super-fast growth: Bamboo is not a tree, but a grass species that grows at lightning speed.
-
No deforestation or clear-cutting: After harvesting, the plant regrows automatically from the existing root system.
-
High CO₂ absorption: Bamboo absorbs up to 5 times more CO₂ than an average tree (source: WWF, INBAR).
-
Environmentally friendly: It uses little water and requires no harsh chemicals or pesticides (source: World Bamboo Organization, FSC).
-
Premium quality: The strong, soft fibers are ideal for making comfortable and hygienic paper.
Sustainable harvesting with an eye for biodiversity
We hear you thinking: 'Shouldn't that bamboo actually stay standing to combat deforestation?' The answer is simple: regular and controlled harvesting actually keeps the bamboo field healthy and stimulates new growth. Because the roots remain in the ground, there is no erosion.
To protect nature, we follow a strict rule: we harvest a maximum of 20% of the available bamboo per farmer. By never harvesting more than 20%, we prevent monoculture, the landscape stays green, and biodiversity is maintained. Furthermore, this ensures farmers maintain enough shade for their other crops and are never financially dependent on just one income.
The result? Less tree felling, lower CO₂ emissions, a softer impact on the planet, and softer toilet paper for you.
