The Good Roll x Deffart: African Art Line
Kingsley Deffor is an artist to remember!
As you may know, one of our goals each year is to showcase the fine arts of African artists. We can’t wait to introduce you to our next creations, created by artist Kingsley Kofi Deffor from Accra, Ghana. He is also known as Deffart. He is a muralist who expresses his admiration and artistic talent through street art. Making a living from it is a childhood dream come true.
Kingsley has amazed us with his creative ability to capture the dignified emotions of those around him and to portray them in detailed figurative portraits. His art is inspired by music, the encounters with people in his daily life and the culture of his hometown Anloga. These figurative portraits and other art that we have selected for this launch are one of our most favorite themes of the African Art Line. They are designed according to his former method of creating designs, using spray cans and airbrush techniques. He now creates art using newspaper and mixed media in his paintings.
Deffart's Sources of Inspiration
His love for art and his hope for the growth of his career is a big reason why he agreed to work with The Good Roll. He feels that the world needs to know about the growing art culture in Ghana. It motivates him to continue, if he can spread his art and more people can be introduced to his beautiful and meaningful work.
To show appreciation for the amazing art Deffart has created, we have teamed up to give you a sneak peek of his art on our toilet paper wrappers. Behind every piece of art is a story.
The painting above expresses the importance of coming together and reuniting white and black people. The earth in the middle represents a head, which stands for the fact that all people, regardless of origin, live together in the same world. For centuries, distinction, discrimination and racism have played a major role in the dynamics between white and black people. So it is time to unite and accept that all of humanity is considered one and shares the same planet in the same universe.
This artwork represents strong African women who are not satisfied with how Africa is changing in its authenticity. You can see from her facial expression that she is sad. The flowers in her hair and the colorful background represent the colorful Africa that the woman sees changing. Her uplifted face translates the positivity, perseverance and confidence that she has in regaining the diverse and colorful authenticity of Africa.
This piece celebrates Ghanaian tradition. It shows a traditional chief (a tribal leader) dressed in his kente (a typical Ghanaian cloth) robe, distributing food to his people with his followers. This shows the great importance of a tribal leader and different tribes to Ghanaian culture.
The fruit and vegetable markets in Ghana are a big part of Ghanaian culture. This image shows a market where women are selling tomatoes. As the women work all day, they wear large hats on their heads to protect them from the heat of the sun. In the background, a woman is visible with a bowl on her head, which is painted to represent the hard and arduous work of selling tomatoes.
This piece of the boy with the water represents the joy of a child who has just learned to wash himself. His proud expression shows that he can shower independently and his wink illustrates the hope he has that his family will see and appreciate this momentous occasion. He also has a lot of fun cleaning and playing with the water.
We are proud to share this new African Art Line and the artworks of Deffart. This box is now online , so that you too are able to have beautiful artworks sent to you in Europe and other countries.
