The 4 main reasons why you should start using fair trade toilet paper in 2022
Toilet paper. It’s something we use every day, without thinking too much about where the raw materials come from or what it’s made of. Maybe 2022 is the year to change that. As we all know, toilet paper is made from, well, paper. Most brands use freshly cut wood for this and then process it into paper in their production process. But why should we cut down even more trees to produce toilet paper, if all we do with it is clean our bottoms and then throw it away? Why not just use recycled paper?
1. No fresh wood needed
Every day, around 27,000 trees are cut down just to make toilet paper. Yep, you read that right: twenty-seven thousand. It’s astonishing that fresh wood is still used to make toilet rolls, which are flushed away seconds after use. When you use eco-friendly toilet paper, it comes from recycled paper that has already been used for other purposes. At The Good Roll, our recycled paper comes from office paper, magazines, packaging and cardboard boxes. This origin ensures that the paper has not been previously treated with chemicals before it is reused in the production of our toilet paper.
However, here at The Good Roll, we believe that recycled toilet paper is not the best solution in the future. That is why we have been researching different alternative sources to make toilet paper from. Through our analysis, we discovered that bamboo could be the perfect alternative! Bamboo has the potential to grow up to 1 meter per day, it is completely biodegradable and does not require the use of any unnatural chemicals to make toilet paper. As a bonus, bamboo produces around 35% more oxygen than trees. This is a real win-win situation if you ask us.
Because we believe so strongly in bamboo as a raw material for toilet paper, we started building the first 100% fair trade toilet paper factory in Ghana! Thanks to this factory, we created jobs for the local Ghanaian population and ensured that there is an extra income thanks to the bamboo cultivation for the local farmers.
2. No plastic used for packaging
If you want to reduce the amount of plastic you use on a daily basis, it might be a good idea to replace your regular toilet paper with fair trade or eco-friendly rolls. The Good Roll chooses to use packaging such as fully recyclable boxes and wrappers. For hygienic reasons, each roll is wrapped in its own colorful wrapper. If you think about it, those colorful wrappers provide a few extra benefits: they always put a smile on your face and they can be used to brighten up your bathroom. By the way, the wrappers can also be used as fun wrapping paper for your next gift!
3. No use of chemicals
The Good Roll is made from 100% recycled fibers. During the manufacturing process, the fibers must be cleaned and freed from ink.
To achieve the high quality and whiteness of our recycled products, two bleaching steps are used during the paper processing: an oxidative one with hydrogen peroxide and a reductive one with sodium salt. Halogens such as fluorine, chlorine and iodine are never used during our production.
We are also pleased to inform you that all our factories are certified according to the strict environmental requirements of ISO 14001 and are certified for their energy management ISO 50001.
4. Fully sustainable production processes
We produce as locally as possible to minimize the impact on the environment. This means that our paper is made from 100% recycled paper collected in Europe and that it is also packaged in the Netherlands. In addition, we minimize unnecessary emissions by limiting transport distances through local production.
At The Good Roll we are proud to say that we are a 100% circular company. This circularity means that there are cycles of resources where we contribute to a never-ending cycle. Circularity means that we design and promote products that can be reused, repaired and manufactured. We ensure that circularity is adhered to throughout our entire supply chain. This includes all our waste streams such as paper, cans, glass, cardboard, wood and PET, food and residual waste. It is not only about the larger streams, but also about the smaller waste streams such as the coffee grounds that are used for the coffee in the office every morning. We stimulate this by having our own waste collector who collects our recycled plastic and ensures that it is recycled correctly by Milieu Service Nederland. They ensure that the plastic is processed in their factory, Plastic Recycling Amsterdam, into a 99% pure raw material. This returns the plastic to the beginning of the circle and the life cycle starts again. We recognize the importance of circularity and are proud to say that we are 100% circular.
In addition to all this, we also work together with a social workshop, to ensure that we can also make a social impact. To read more about this, click here .
