Hip hip hooray!

We are rolling in the right direction! We started with a mission eight years ago, and so much has changed since then. (S)wipe through our journey and treat yourself to bamboo goodies with 15% discount.

THIS IS HOW WE ROLL 🧻

Melle and Sander started The Good Roll with a mission. We were shocked to discover that one in three people worldwide does not have access to a safe and clean toilet. At the same time, a million trees are cut down every day for paper production. That includes your toilet rolls, too. Does it have to be that way?! No! In eight years, thanks in part to our enthusiastic customers, we have achieved a bizarre amount. With every roll, you support the construction of toilets in Africa and combat deforestation. That really feels good. Take a look at what we have achieved together.

BAMBOO TAKES CENTER STAGE

We love bamboo. It grows quickly and requires little water and no pesticides. Furthermore, it regenerates on its own after harvest, bamboo absorbs up to 35% more CO2 than trees, and it prevents soil erosion. It also feels very soft on your bum, by the way.

This incredibly strong product therefore plays the leading role in our production process. In fact, we are turning the entire paper industry upside down with it! In Ghana, we built the world's first bamboo pulp mill so that many more companies can produce more sustainably.

Farmers earn 245% more by planting 20% of their land with bamboo. That’s an extra €4,500 per year!

THE FIRST EVER BAMBOO PULP MILL

What an adventure this has been. At the world’s very first fair trade bamboo pulp mill in Ghana, we process locally grown bamboo into pulp. Usually, this is sourced from countries like China or India, even though Ghana is bursting with bamboo! Such a shame, right? The Good Roll Africa makes the production of our sustainable rolls possible, but it does much more than that. It provides the local community in Ghana with jobs and income. They used to see the bamboo overgrowing their land as worthless. Now, they are proud of it!

THE PAPER INDUSTRY SHAKEN UP

If we can replace paper with bamboo, anyone can! The pulp from our local factory replaces wood as a raw material on a gigantic scale. It is not only suitable for toilet paper, but also for packaging, boxes, hygiene products and more. Bamboo is thus a sustainable substitute for many industries that previously relied on wood. That is how we make the entire process very good.

243 TOILETS AND COUNTING

And what about those toilets? We fix that by using 50 percent of our net profit for eco-friendly biodigester toilets in Ghana. Clean toilets prevent disease and improve the daily lives of the population. Girls, for example, can now attend school even during their periods. That’s how a toilet changes a future!

We look locally at what is needed and get to work. Ghanaian craftsmen build the toilets using materials from the region.

That is how we build sustainably and create jobs.

Those 243 toilets will improve 12,150 lives!

SOCIAL IMPACT IN THE NETHERLANDS

So, quite a lot is happening in Ghana and in the paper industry. But we also think it is important to contribute closer to home. That is why we work with the go-getters at various social enterprises. More than 70 people wrap and package some of our rolls. In this way, they can participate in working life, which is less of a given for them. Great, right?
